The Story of Baby Moses in the Quran
The Chapter Al-Qasas (The Story) is one of the last chapters to be revealed in Mecca. It tells the story of Prophet Moses. This chapter was revealed about the time of the migration from Mecca to Madinah, Angel Gabriel asked the Prophet Muhammad if he will miss his hometown where he was born.
Prophet Muhammad replied with affirmative as he was leaving his birthplace and beloved city, Allah revealed this Chapter. It talks about a mother who had to abandon her baby, and how Allah made him return to her, and one day Muhammad would also return to Mecca.
Let's start with the verse 1-7
1 Ta. Sin. Mim. (Only God knows the meaning of this verse)
2 These are Verses of the Book that makes (things) clear.
3 We rehearse to thee some of the story of Moses and Pharaoh in Truth, for people who believe.
4 Truly Pharaoh elated himself in the land and broke up its people into sections, depressing a small group among them: their sons he slew, but he kept alive their females: for he was indeed a maker of mischief.
5 And We wished to be Gracious to those who were being depressed in the land, to make them leaders (in Faith) and make them heirs,
6 To establish a firm place for them in the land, and to show Pharaoh, Haman, and their hosts, at their hands, the very things against which they were taking precautions.
7 So We sent this inspiration to the mother of Moses: "Suckle (thy child), but when thou hast fears about him, cast him into the river, but fear not nor grieve: for We shall restore him to thee, and We shall make him one of Our apostles."
The Pharaoh advisor has suggested during one year all new born males will be killed and the next year we will spare their lives so they will try to break the prophecy and at the same time have enough slaves to work. The Pharaoh agreed and let the rule has been enforced in Egyptian lands.
In the year that boys were to be spared, Prophet Aaron was born. In the year that boys were to be killed, Prophet Moses was born. This cause his mother a lot of worries and she kept the birth a secret for sometime. At the end, for her baby safety from being killed, she put Moses in a little basket and release it at the River Nile and pray to God to protect and save his baby and wish that she could meet her baby one day.
Let's continue with verse 8-13
8 Then the people of Pharaoh picked him up (from the river): (It was intended) that (Moses) should be to them an adversary and a cause of sorrow: for Pharaoh and Haman and (all) their hosts were men of sin.
9 The wife of Pharaoh said: "(Here is) joy of the eye, for me and for thee: slay him not. It may be that he will be use to us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not (what they were doing)!
10 But there came to be a void in the heart of the mother of Moses: She was going almost to disclose his (case), had We not strengthened her heart (with faith), so that she might remain a (firm) believer.
11 And she said to the sister of (Moses), "Follow him" so she (the sister) watched him in the character of a stranger. And they knew not.
12 And we ordained that he refused suck at first, until (His sister came up and) said: "Shall I point out to you the people of a house that will nourish and bring him up for you and be sincerely attached to him?"...
13 Thus did We restore him to his mother, that her eye might be comforted, that she might not grieve, and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true: but most of them do not understand.
The Pharaoh's wife happened to be at the river and took the basket, out of curiosity she opened it and saw a baby. She informed the Pharaoh and asked him if they could keep the baby. At first the Pharoah disagree but later on he agreed to spare the baby's life.
As they took baby Moses, they were asking for anyone that could breast feed him, however, Moses refused to drink the milk from any of the nurses in the palace. God had strengthen Moses mother's heart even though she is not sure what will be the fate of her son, so that she will be patient and remain a firm believer. Happened that Moses's big sister was there overlooking the palace and heard the news, she approached the palace and told them "Shall I point out to you a household who will rear him for you and take care of him?" They agreed and to their surprise baby Moses has taken immediate liking when united to his real mother and continues to breast feed. Her mother was very glad and pleased to be able to meet her baby and know that he will be safe. As God had promised, Moses mother will meet her son once again.
